Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs is about a sixteen year old boy named Jacob. His grandfather Abraham Portman would tell him stories and show him pictures about peculiar children he grew up with in an orphanage on an island in Wales. His grandfather said he moved to the orphanage because it was a safe and fantastic place where everyone was happy. Here no one gets sick or died. It was protected by the bird from the white eyed monsters. But his grandfather left the orphanage to fight in World War ll. But after he leaves on September 3, 1940 the island gets bombed and the orphanage gets hits. Jacob never really believed the stories his grandfather would tell him. However one day everything changed. Jacob found his grandfather dying in the back of his house. His last words were telling him to go to the island where he grew up and find the bird in the loop. So he promised him. When his grandfather took his last breath he saw a creature in the wood behind the house and he knew something was wrong. But before Jacob leaves he finds a letter for his grandfather from Miss Peregrine who should be dead from 15 years ago. So just like he promised he went to the island in Wales where he saw Miss Peregrines home where his grandfather lived but the house was almost all demolished. Everything he thought he knew about his grandfather will change once he gets to the island. Were the stories of what his grandfather told him true?
The protagonist of this book is Jacob Portman. He is sixteen and is an only child. He lives in Florida with his mom and dad. His family is very wealthy; his father is an amateur ornithologist and wants to be a nature writer. Jacob’s mom‘s family owns a hundred and fifteen drugstores. Jacob does not have a lot of friends and sometimes gets bullied in school. Jacob is a smart, clever, and peculiar teenager. He is in his schools special education program. He has always thought and felt he was different from other teenagers. The book never really describe what Jacob looks like but by the pictures that show his grandfather you can get an idea of what he might look like. So if I could compare what actor would match Jacob it would be Logan Lerman.

The book takes place in the 21st century and in the 20th century. For most of the book it takes place in an island in Wales. The island is a small fishing community. The island has muddy gravel streets, small cottages, a church, small shops, a museum, lots of diesel generators , some of abandon old cottages, and the priest hole a bar and motel where Jacob and his father stays at. The island reminds me of a horror film. It’s very foggy and the people seem unknown about the outside world. Which I think the setting is good for a eerie and odd book.
